So why stem cells are important? To break down the importance
of stem cells is nearly impossible because of its virtually unlimited
use.
Its potential to treat wide array of diseases and conditions made
stem cells very important and an essential factor in the field of
medicine, due to its ability to renew itself, differentiation and
give rise to specialized cells.
Primary reason why stem cells are important is due to human development.
Stem cells unique attributes and control taught us more about human
development. When disease such as cancer were thought as a result
of abnormal cell proliferation and differentiation, scientists were
able to identify ways to reverse the condition.
Another good reason why stem cells are important is because of its potential to reverse birth defects. Stem cell research will help scientists understand cell regulations and what chemical triggers for the stem cell to proliferate and differentiate, which are essential keys to address the source of birth defects.
Stem cells are also regarded important due to its therapeutic value.
Cell therapy has been used nowadays to treat some cancer types. This
type of treatment replaces dysfunctional cells and tissues with new
stem cells.
Since the number of patients awaiting for transplant is far greater than the number of organs available for transplant, the potential of stem cells to replace damaged cells and tissues has minimized the problem. Soon, diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's can be treated with the help of stem cells, as well as those conditions that involves the heart and the retina (blindness).
Stem cells holds a great promise in treating many diseases; its basic understanding will lead to addressing the aspects where things go awry, and disease started. Gone were the days when some patients suffer endlessly awaiting for treatment, while others die before being able to get one.
Though tainted with debate and ethical controversy, at some point in our lives, we may consider stem cell treatment especially if we are personally involved. Regardless of how 'unethical' the procedure may be, our need to end one's misery will make us consider the process of how stem cells can be obtained. This is why stem cells are important --- if experts can harness its true potentials, it would be possible one day to reverse serious conditions that plague millions of people around the world.
