Can stem cells cure diabetes

Because the previous treatments for diabetes are not satisfying, scientists are looking for a better treatment and they found that stem cells can cure diabetes.
Canada and the United States' scientists did some researches on diabetes rats.
Therapeutic cloning
These rats were given stem cells therapy through injections, and the results were surprising :
1. the injected stem cells could track the damaged area (pancreas) and focus on it
2. the stem cells provoked the regeneration of new beta cells in pancreas
3. the diabetes symptoms were reversed
4. within two weeks, the rats' blood sugar level was back to almost normal and the blood insulin has increased
5. when the stem cells were injected in healthy or non-diabetic rats, they showed no side effects at all (normal).

Based on the researches, the scientists concluded that the 'stem cells' are somehow very 'brilliant' cells. Not only that they can be specialized into beta cells, but also they trigger the pancreas to produce its own beta cells.
The best about stem cells is that they are taken directly from the patient, therefore when the stem cells are transplanted back into the patient, the body will not consider them as the enemies and later attack them.

Steps of the stem cells therapy for diabetes :

1. the bone marrow blood stem cells are taken from the patient
2. the stem cells are specialized into beta cells through cultivation in the laboratory
3. meanwhile, drugs are given to reduce the patient's body immune cells
4. the specialized stem cells are transplanted back into the patient's body through injection
5. the specialized stem cells track the problem area (pancreas) and focus the treatment there
6. the body immune cells do not consider the injected stem cells as enemies
7. the stem cells replace the damaged cells and heal the organ (pancreas)
8. the healthy pancreas can produce its own new healthy beta cells
9. the patient's blood sugar level returns to normal and the insulin level is increased

Although the research on stem cells for diabetes has shown successful results, further studies must still be done to officially guarantee the stem cells treatment for diabetes. Hopefully it may open great opportunities for many better diabetes drugs in the future.
